Daly Cup Epic Finish

The Daly Cup came to a thrilling climax on Sunday evening at the De Zalze Golf Club and estate. At the turn it was pretty even going with The Meerkat holding onto a slender 1 stroke advantage over the Main Cheese, with Donk, CHarles Roff and the Great Dayne a further 2 strokes back.

It was here that the Meerkat, who seemed to be feeling the ill effects of the awesome burger at halk way, lost the plot and any chance of winning his maiden Daly Cup. An errant tee shot saw his drive out of bounds, and after running back to the tee to hit another, banged the second out of bounds too. Donk also began to capitualte here on the 10th as this saw him put together 3 straight doubles.

It was the Great Dayne however who managed to keep it together on the stroke 2 and sink a legthy birdie putt for a 4 point swing on the leader thus catapulting himself into the lead. Solid golf kept him there until the final hole. Meanwhile the Ruth had been quietly moving up the leaderboard with some solid golf and standing on the 18th tee box found himself only 1 back. Both Great and Ruth had monster drives on the short Par 4 18th leaving themselves 30m in for their 2nd. Great playing in front of Ruth, was standing over an 8ft birdie putt for the title and managed to 3 putt, missing a 3ft putt coming back!

With it all to do, Ruth, in what can only be described as on of the most remarkable shots of the day, thinned his ball through the bunker and it rolled right through and onto the green, stopping 8ft ftom the hole. He then stood over this putt of only 8 ft to win the Daly Cup on his first attempt and with steely resolve he drained it to take the title by a solitary stroke from a distraught Great Dayne.

Charles Roff walked away with the wooden spoon for most golf, but it was a hotly contested affair with the woeful Donk and defending champion Nic Mac, who might as well not have turned up.

Daly Cup Revival

It has been ages since the last running of the Daly Cup. It was on that fateful day that the Croc grabbed the most coveted prize in Cape Town Golf.

Rumours are flying around as to the identity of the players that will make up this iterations field. Names like Ruth Morris, Charles Roff and Thomas Vaughan have been used, and in what could be an amazing occurrence, the 2 time champion and only player ever to win the Daly cup back to back with a competition record of 75, the Great Dayne could be dusting off he clubs and throwing his name back into the mix to vy for this awesome prize.

Murray King will probably be in attendance and will be trying his utmost not to land the wooden spoon for a record breaking 5th time.

For past winners and records as well as the previos tournaments write-ups look below.

Americans Steal The Daly Cup

Last Sunday saw the 6th running of the Daly Cup. It was held at Mowbray in what can only be described as perfect golfing conditions. A powerful field assembled including Daly Cup New commers Fat Whitfield, Jamie Ross, Jason Elley and Nic McConnachie. The latter three will be in the American side for the upcoming Presidents cup and will be competing against The Internationals. In amongst the field were previous Champions Murray King and Jambles Charton as well as defending Champion and Daly Cup record Holder Dayne Allenbrook.

Allenbrook, King, Fat and Thompson were paired up in the first 4 ball and Dawson-Squibb, McConnachie, Elley and Ross in the 2nd. King got away to a flying start, taking the corse to pieces on the front side. Defending Champion Allenbrook fell to pieces from the word go. McConnachie and Dawson-Squibb were a shot back at the turn.

It was at the turn where King's challenge faded with a double on the par5 10th. Nic Mac held firm when all other challengers faltered. No-one could match the Croc's shot making abilty and steely resolve. He ended up winning by 5 shots, a new Daly Cup record.

And for the first time in 6 months, the Cup was wrestled away from a woeful Allenbrook in what can only be described as a pitiful defense of his title with his effort winning the wooden spoon.

Have You Seen This Man?

Have anyone seen this guy? He has been reportedly frequenting the various strip clubs and whorehouses of Cape Town when he should have been confirming the Daly Cup bookings. This folks is the reason that the Daly Cup was cancelled this weekend. The Muppet booked for the wrong day, so the entire spectacular had to be cancelled. Some say it was because he knew he had no chance of winning, others say it was because he is in love and cant think straight. When contacted for a response, he make some fart noises with his mouth and could be heard singing,"Roxanne....Roxaaaaaaaaaaane!!" while stamping his feet and waving his arms.

A full investigation has been launced to get to the root of this abhoration and the guilty parties will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We will leave no stone unturned. God help the villains that brought the Daly Cup into disrepute. The flag will be flown at half mast to comemorate this miserable event. As for this Rascal, if you see him at Oblivion (best bet) kick him in the balls.

Daly Cup Blunder!

The CEO of SA Golf Inc was given the axe after fans flocked into the MGC this morning only to find the Bells ‘bread’ mixed teeing it up.

Players and spectators gathered around the CEO’s hut demanding answers as they were clearly not going to be able to get this months Daly Cup underway. The CEO released a statement, in front of a disgruntled audience, saying that he accepts full responsibility for having to cancel this months Daly Cup. He said it was all down to a very simple error involving being able to tell the difference between the ‘S’ on a calendar for Saturday and the ‘S’ on a calendar for Sunday. When asked how someone could get that so horribly wrong he replied '42'. Perhaps they were asking him the wrong question.

The CEO will also have to appear in front of a disciplinary committee on Monday morning as the mix-up left Mowbray locals in disarray on Saturday when not 1 but 5 4-balls failed to rock up for the competition! (Picture the old guys getting heated as their mates couldn’t play due to some idiots’ incompetence)

The Daly Cup had received much hype as the draft, completed only yesterday, was released last night revealing a field full of world class players sure to put on a crowd pleasing performance. Reports revealed that the field was one of the best yet and that the current Daly Cup holder was sure to be knocked off his pedestal. The cup holder reserved comment yesterday but after the bad news of today he was seen with, what could only be described as, a look of relief on his face.

The cup will be held at a later stage and I’m sure will be better organized. Fans can return their tickets from today’s tournament for a full refund. The Daly Cup organizers apologize for the inconvenience caused and are currently looking for a new CEO.

Daly Cup Hotting Up

The Announcement of the Daly Cup Date has stirred the Cape Town Golfing fraternity into action. Reports and sightings have been flooding in from the general public and fans alike telling of how Cape Towns finest have come out of the woodwork.

It is rumoured that Paul Brewis might be making a comeback to golf after the golfing disaster of '99. He reportedly played so badly in a tournament that he vowed never to play the game again. News has come in that he has alledgedly been working with a Dutch Pharmaceutical Company to get over his fear of the Game and lack of BMT. He has spent many intense sessions with the Dutch Marketing Director working on his image and general branding. They have apparently been leaving no stone unturned or bed unmade to get his game back on track. Many attribute the many hours of personal training given by the dedicated dutch lass to Brewis's new found lease on life.

Croc McConnachie is rumoured to be making his Daly Cup debut next Sunday as he joins the trail of players looking to take the coveted crown. He has performed well in previous big competitions such as the Burberry Cup and Fancourt Shootout. He has a wise head on his shoulders and that is waht is needed in these big Competitions. His only downfall is his recurring injury which he feels neccessar to see "the Doctor" up to 3 times a rounds for. Let us hope he stays injury free and makes a good go of it. Will the old adage ring true yet again? You cant win a Daly Cup on your first attempt.

Villager Manager Charles Sanderoff is also rumoured to have his sights set on the coveted title. He has come close on a few occasions and will be looking to get his name on the cup. Having played in amany international events he has the experience to win at this level and many are touting him to be the one to topple Allenbrook and stop him doing the unthinkable, winning an unpresidented 3 in a row.

There are still a few spots open so get in quick to book your place in Golf's Greatest Challenge. Watch this space for further developments and press releases.

Daly Cup Murmerings

All has been quiet in the Cape Town Golf scene of late. No new attempts have been made to lossen the vice like stranglehold that Dayne Allenbrook currently has on the Daly Cup. The only play of any sort that has been going on is Murray King's Participation in the 2008 Mowbray Club Champs. No news has reached The Playroom as to his performance, but we will bring you the news as soon as we get it.

There have been a few whispers that there will be a Daly Cup Championship next Sunday 7 April at a venue still to be decided. The field is still to be confirmed, but unconfirmed rumours ahve surfaced that the field could contain superstars such as The Guru and The Name not to mention the notorious Jambles Charton as he will attempt, probably unsuccsessfully to topple the current champion.

Get in touch if you are keen to play, and you will be considered!!

I Found these pearlers of our Man Johnny D. He is pushing it now. What a great man.

Daly Cup Championship

Yesterday saw the 7th running of Cape Town's most prestigous golf challenge, the Daly Cup. It was held at Mowbray Golf & Country Club in somewhat blustery conditions. There was a 10 strong field boasting 3 former champions and a host of top 10 players from the Playroom Tour. Allenbrook was looking to make history and become the only player to win back-to-back Daly Cup Championships in the Open Era.

In the field were a few Daly Cup deutants. Shank Miles and the British Pro Alex Roy started in the star studded field, but the most notable debutant was The Name Thompson. The Name has just finished serving a 6 month Daly Cup Ban after being suspended for the second time late last year. Much hype had arisen on how the Name would cope with the pressure of a Daly Cup and the crowds were out in numbers to see him off the 1st.

The betting odds were released from Ladbrokes late on Saturday night and showed Allenbrook as slight favourite to repeat his last Daly Cup performance at 3-1, with Charton (A previous Daly Cup winner) a close second at 7-2. The Bookies bet was Sanderoff playing off an 18 (The Daly Cup maximum allowed Handicap) at 7-1.

It was Charton, Thompson and Roy who would get things underway. Charton and Roy both found the semi-rough off the first tee and it was then up to Thompson to get his Daly Cup carreer off to a start. The crowd waited with anticipation as the Name circled his bag, like a shark circling a surfer, deciding whether or not to take the driver. A groan went out as he produced a much safer iron and got ready to hit. Not a sound rang out around the grandstands as the Name stood over his ball. And...he banged it out of bounds. The crowd roared with aproval and the games were on.

The next three ball consisted of Shank Miles, Rhino van Niekerk and defending Daly Cup Champion, Dayne Allenbrook. They all managed to get off the tee without a problem. Following them was the final 4 ball of Charles Sanderoff, Tom Dawson-Squib, Tim Florence and Murray King.

The front 9 was a slow process, but on the whole rather uneventful after the Name's early antics, except for Charton's frequent outbursts in which he would issue a barage of abuse in every which direction to the great amusement of his playing partners. Shank raised his bat with an unimperssive 51 and was now just enjoying the sunshine. Allenbrook emerged the leader at the half way stage by two strokes with a rather good 39. He was trailed by Sanderoff and Dawson-Squibb. A further shot back was The Name who had made a good recovery to come in with a 42.

And so the Back 9 started, and with it, The Name's charge had ended, making a pair of double's at the 10th and 11th he saw his challenge go out the window. The media had been proved right and it was once again shown that you cant win a Daly Cup at your first attempt. So, Allenbrook stood at the 12th tee box with a 4 stroke lead and in reach of his 2nd Daly Cup victory.

The wind had now got up to close to Gale force speeds, making the golf almost impossible, and threw the chances of posting good scores out of the window. In the Last few holes Rhino van Niekerk made a late charge along with Dawson-Squibb and Sanderoff, while all the others fell away. D-S was only 1 shot back, while Rhino and Sanderoff were two back with only the Medal 18th to play. Dawson-Squibb blew out under the pressure while the other two could only manage double bogey 6's. Allenbrook made a par 4 on the 18th to grab his 2nd Daly Cup Victory by a record winning Margin of four strokes.

Leaderboard:
+ 2 Allenbrook
+ 6 van Niekerk
+ 6 Sanderoff
+ 7 Dawson-Squibb

Most Golf went to a disasterously out of form Jambles Charton who came in with the first N/R in Daly Cup history after picking up on the 18th.

A great day was had by all and the next Daly Cup will eagerly anticipated. Participants will be notified closer tothe time, after all applications have been recieved.

Daly Cup Trophy Unveiled

It has been an exciting week for SA Amateur Golf. First with the announcement of the field for the Burberry Championship and this mornings long awaited unveiling of the Daly Cup Trophy.

It is a beautifully handcrafted trophy set in solid Pine, with a coating of white paint and it has a golf ball from the 1970's mounted on it, that is said to have been stolen out of Gary Player's bag by his caddy. It is rumoured to have a market value of R 4,75 and is a one of a kind. Below is the Daly Cup in all its glory. It even has the names of the previous winners inscribed on the back.

A last word of good luck to all those competing in the Burberry Champs on Friday. It is a strong field and it will be a fiercly fought competition for the years first piece of silverware.

BREAKING NEWS: This just in, The Guru snr has been struck down with what seems to be Tick Bite Fever. He contracted the disease on his recent trip to the Transkei. He is a doubtful starter for the Burberry Champs on Friday. His camp was unavailable for comment.

The Battle at Fancourt

The eagerly awaited time had finally come. It was time for the Annual Battle at Fancourt. Hours of gruelling training had been put in by the players to make sure that they were in peak condition and at the top of their games to compete for the ultimate prize. The pairings were as follows:

Team Head Boy consisted of Fancourt Veteran and former Daly Cup Runner Up Charles Roff. He was paired with Fancourt Debutant Thomas Vaughan who is making his professional debut on South African soil after playing for many years on the UK Tour until a crippling back injury plagued him for awhile. He is now back to his best and fighting fit.

Team Bear consisted of Current Daly Cup holder and Fancourt veteran Great Dayne and a player who has burst onto the SA Golfing scene grabbing Rookie of the year, Garth Oliver.

The morning came bright and still, The Battle would be fought on the Montagu Course. The Bears started shakily with both of them blasting out of bounds on the first, while The Head Boys managed to sneak in a par and took an early lead. Blows were exchanged over the next few holes with quite a few birdies had by both teams. At half way the Head Boys were 2 up and looking strong to take home the cup.

Things remained to go slowly for the Bears as they went a further shot down on the 10th. The Head Boys had some solid play and were not allowing the Bears back into the game. So, the Bears were staring down the barrell at 3 down with 4 to play. It was then that the Bears managed to pick up 2 birdies in 3 holes to be standing on the 18th 1 down.

Garth and Charles Roff bombed out and it was left up to a straight out battle between Thomas Vaughan and the Great Dayne for the Title. Vaughan layed up short of the water on the 465m par 5 18th, while Dayne decided to go for the Green in 2, a decision which ended in disaster when his ball found the water.

So, this left Vaughan with the easy task of chipping onto the green and two putting for the win. HE CHOKED. With the entire Fancourt Clubhouse looking on, he unceremoniously dumped his ball into the water and could only manage a double bogey 7. This left Dayne with a cluch 6 footer for the tie. He made the put and for the first time in history, The Battle at Fancourt would go into a playoff over 18 holes at the Bramble Hill course at Fancourt.

The Playoff took place the next day at Bramble Hill. It was a completely different affair this time. The Bears left their golf and their tempers at home. They stumbled, fell, suffered and mared to a 4and 3 thrashing at the hands of the Head Boys.

When interviewed, the Bears Spokesman had this to say "My Boys were thoroughly out played today, we will however be making a formal inquiry into the handicaps of the Head Boys as we feel that they were seriously inflated. Our congratulations go out to them, pending the results of our investigation"

Afternoon Shoot-Out

An impromptu shoot out was organised at Mowbray. It had a battle of the Bridges feel to it. It was Perfect under pressure practice for the Upcoming Daly Cup Challenge in Port Alfred early next year.

The Shoot Out Competitors were: Previous Daly Cup Champion Murray King, who has been in shocking form of late, but can always turn it on.

Guru Florence Jnr who has been in impeccable form of late and narrowly lost out in the last running of the Daly Cup.

Current Daly Cup Holder Dayne Allenbrook, who is arguably in the form of his life after taking the Daly Cup Just a few short weeks ago so emphatically with a new record of 75.

So, the scene was set for an awesome 9-hole shootout. Things started well enough with all three players playing decent golf, with a few putts being missed here and there. Then disaster struck for Florence when his driver (pictured below) literally smashed to pieces. The top came clean off. His game never really recovered from there and he slowly fell away.

It was then down to a 2 horse race with King eeking out to a slight 1 shot lead with 2 to play. Allenbrook then pulled level and they stood on the 18th tee box all square. Both found the trees of the tee and had to play out to 100 for their seconds. King went first, sticking his ball to 20ft. Then Allenbrook produced a magical shot to 8ft. King duly missed his putt and Allenbrook was left with an 8ft putt to win the shootout. He lipped out and the shootout was tied.

Probably a fair result in the end as both players looked solid. This has set the stage for what will surely be an amazing Daly Cup in Port Alfred.

Jambles Charton will be making the trip up a few weeks early to get try and sink his balls in the 'shaved' greens of Kenton. I have heard that this is rather easy as the greens in Kenton are recently grown or 'young' and very easy to putt on.

The Name will also be in attendance in Kenton, but it is unsure whether he will be able to tear himself away from the ladies long enough to play some golf. He is still under a Daly Cup ban for his non-showing in the last Daly Cup.

The Bull Will also be floating around Kenton hoping to catch himself some British Fish. It has also been rumoured that Jambles and the Name are fishing too, but no catches have been confirmed as of yet.

Daly Cup Thriller

A slightly windy but otherwise perfect Tuesday morning saw the staging of the 4th Daly Cup. It was a relatively strong field, boasting two previous champions. The event was marred by the withdrawl of the ladies favourite, The Name.

He cited the blustery conditions as his reason for pulling out. This was just not acceptable and the tournament organisers enlisted the services of the Playroom reporters to find the real story. These reporters uncovered some shocking information regarding the ladies man. It has now been confirmed that he was attending a doctors appointment to take care of a recurrence of the dissease that has plagued him from his Gap Year. The timing is co-incides with the arrival of an appaernt flame from England, a miss Georgie. This is disgrasceful behaviour and he has brought shame on himself. He will be banned from the Daly Cup until further notice.

This Startling discovery aside, the 7 remaining golfers set about their task, with Guru jnr making a birdie on the first hole and shooting out to an early lead. He held on to his lead right through the front nine. At the turn the Guru was leading, followed closely by The Great Dane 1 shot back and Jambles and Bevello Riva a further 3 back.

It was then that the 4 balls were shuffled so that the leaders were separated from the rif-raf and the game was on. I would just like to take thed time out to make special mention of the fact that our budding pro and innaugural Daly Cup winner, Murray King crashed to a 50 on the front nine. This left him 15 shots back at the turn. Ouch.

It was then that Great Dane made his move. Following up his birdie on nine with another on 10, he drew level with Guru and the game was on. With Guru faltering and Jambles falling further behind, it was left to the Daly Cup veteran to make the front running, with some superb putting and enormous driving, The Great Dane shot out to a 2 stroke lead with only 5 holes to play.

And that was the way it stayed till the last. The challenges of Jambles and Bevello Riva had wiltered away and it was just the Guru and The Great Dane down the home straight. A par on the last was good enough for the Great Dane to win his maiden Daly Cup by 3 strokes with an impressive score of 75.

In his post match interview he had this to say: "Guru was charging early on, and I knew I just had to stick with him. He polayed really well, but just couldn't keep it up. Im quite surprised at the level of my play, my form was average at best coming in to the tournament and I was not that confident. But, as soon as I started banging my driver, I knew I had a chance. It's great to finally win the Daly Cup and I hope that I can defend it in Kenton."

John Daly would turn in his Camper Van

Things have been quiet on the golfing front lately due to the flurry of 'Admin' the tour pro's are currently experiencing. Most of the players have had other commitments to attend to and have little time to compete for the coveted Daly Cup.

Reports have been surfacing that current Daly Cup holder Jambles Charton has been Keeping himself busy by furthering his Karaoke career. He has been spotted at various Cape Town establishments flaunting his Supernatural Singing abilities to anyone and everyone he comes into contact with. He is so dedicated in fact, that when a lovely (not so young) fan asked him for some personal assistance and some hands on training, he promptly went home with her and obliged like the true professional that he is.

The Name has also been putting in some time on the golf course of late with the odd sneaky 9holes at Mowbray and I am pleased to report that the Little man had this positive news to convey: "The Mowbray greens are looking a lot better, they are a lot softer and have been recently shaved. A lot like my new girlfr...um...oh...name a hot chick and Iv probably scored her. Fuck Off!"

MJ King seems to have devoted his time to cricket these days. I think he has finally laid his dreams of becoming a professional golfer and winning the Daly Cup to rest. Dreams die hard old boy.
